Pathways to wildfire resilient individuals & communities through Home Ignition Zone Mitigation

Residents’  mitigation of home wildfire risk and the 100ft zone around (Home Ignition Zone (HIZ)) their home contributes to active and passive home survival.  We expand upon our 2022 case study to include communities in a different socio-ecological context–the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These communities may have different successes and barriers to mitigating wildfire risk. Differences from Santa Cruz Mountains may include, but are not limited to, a more frequent destructive wildfire history,  longer time since a recent fire event, opportunities to rebuild post- wildfire, and the prevalence of second homeownership.
